In addition to a genuine word of thanks this letter contains an update concerning the work, sometimes a mission anecdote, and a note indicating where we may need funds as soon as possible, for example, campaigns to win souls or printing of song books or construction needs, or benevolence requests.

Greetings in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The weather in India has been atrocious. India recorded an historic high last month as the thermometer hit 123 blazing degrees. All of our schools of preaching had to close since none of them have air-conditioners. Of course, even if they did have one they could not have used it due to the overload on the power grid which completely failed in numerous places. Over 500 people died from the heat. Then an unexpected early monsoon, hurricane force wind and rain, lashed the poor people and caused flooding in many places. Some of our church buildings, and homes of brethren, had their glass windows blown out, then their homes and church buildings were flooded by the heavy rains. In spite of all this foul weather our brethren continued to preach and teach the Gospel when it was possible. Hundreds of Gospel Meetings, Youth Rallies, and Seminars with denominational preachers were conducted. To God be all the glory for the many souls baptized and the brethren who were strengthened in their faith by hearing the Word.

While working in India during the month of May for two consecutive years I found that it was the hottest time of the year I have ever experienced. However, there was one redeeming feature—May is the “season for mangoes”. For mango lovers there is nothing like the “food of the gods” as the Indians describe it, but even that savory fruit is not enough to lure this brother back to India in May!

The work is going very well throughout the country.

We are especially pleased to report that two of our construction jobs are well underway.
One is an all-purpose building-which will serve the brethren’s needs for fellowships, marriages, and a dining hall for our school of preaching in Pamidipadu.
The other work is in north India about 500 miles above Calcutta. That work involves a large “campus” including a preacher’s residence (brother Joseph Kathi is that preacher and he is also the Director of our proposed school of preaching in Bagdogra). This house will have three guest rooms which are self-contained apartments for our visiting teachers for the School of Preaching. There is also the construction of a church building with the School of Preaching on the second floor with two classrooms, dormitory for 18 students, dining hall, kitchen and bathrooms.

So in addition to your gifts being used to preach and teach the Word throughout some 15 states in India, there is a lot of new construction going on.

Our printing ministry has just distributed 5,000 Telegu language song books, and 500 copieš of the newly translated book by Ed Wharton, The Church of Christ, which was presented to selected areas at our preacher’s seminars.

Grace and Peace,
Jerris

In a letter to brother Ron Clayton, who is currently doing mission work in India, one of our native Indian preachers wrote about the situation in Bangalore:

Dear Uncle Ron,

Greetings to you in Jesus Precious name.
I hope you received my last email. 1 sent you an update of the situation here in Bangalore and other areas ofKarnataka. To further update you on this issue. I have been closely observing the developments and this is what I see.

Last Sunday was very tense. People who attended church everywhere were very scared. Our congregation had very few people attend because of fear of attack. According to our expectation a couple of churches were attacked in Bangalore 3 Km from our Home near the ring road. Then Christians came in protest and the ring road was blocked couple hours.

The situation is so bad that there is a policeman at every single church in Bangalore. The police man sleeps there at night as well. The very fact that there is a policeman at every church signifies the threat that lingers. At the Midicanhalli church we were asked not to come because groups came there in the morning and threatened to attack if we conducted services.

I am deeply sorry to say that we will not be able to have VBS classes in November. As the police have requested us and all churches in Bangalore to cut down on their actives temporarily in sight of the security situation here in Bangalore.  Unless the real people behind the attacks are arrested we are under constant threat.  I think it is wise not to have any programs for our children during the holidays.   It is better than regretting later if anything unfortunate happens.
Thank you,
Jonathan Paul Raj

What are we to do when they persecute us?   The Lord gave this instruction to the Apostles:

When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes.   Matthew 10: 23

This is exactly what we must do. There is work to be done.. .there are receptive people to reach for the Lord.. .and persecution is not to be found everywhere.
We weep with those who weep. Some have been martyred for their Lord. Others have lost property. Some brethrens' homes have been burned. A few church buildings vandalized...communion trays destroyed.. .song books torn apart. All brethren have been terrorized.

The Lord also said:

Have no fear of them....do not fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul....So everyone who confesses me before men, I also will confess before my Father who is in Heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in Heaven.

Matthew 10: 26-33

As of this writing the three months long wave of persecution appears to be ebbing. We thank God for His mercy. (Compare Matthew 24: 22.)

Our work is going very well.  We have about seven major campaigns underway of which we will participate in 4 or 5 with the remainder being totally India led and directed.  I know of five baptisms to date.

The weather here has been pleasant for the most part with the temperatures around 88 during the day and about 79 at night.  The humidity is very oppressive at times and then we get a seasonal Monsoon shower to make things "feel" better.

We will leave Hyderabad on Saturday the 18th for Vijayawada and for Pamidipadu (near Ongole) both places are near the coast and will likely be very humid and uncomfortable.  The brethren are very excited to host us, and we are just as excited to see them and share the lessons we have prepared.  Juanita will be teaching the events of the Last Week of Jesus' earthly life from Matthew 26, 27, and 28.  I will be lecturing to preachers during the daytime hours concerning Worship as God would have us to do.  I will be speaking on the history of singing in the church and will emphasize Accapella singing.  I will also be helping the Indian brethren edit a songbook which we have been working on for over five years.  Hopefully this songbook will be ready for printing by January 2013.

Grace and Peace, Jerris
